Finasteride 

Written information about this prescription has been provided for you. Please read this information before you take this medication. If you have questions concerning this prescription, a pharmacist is available during normal business hours to answer these questions.

Taking Your Prescription

Finasteride 1mg tablets are taken by mouth once daily with or without food. Do not exceed one dose every 24 hours. If you miss a dose or forget to take your medication, skip the missed dose and continue taking the medication at your next scheduled dose. Do not crush your medication. Do not take extra medication to make up for the missed dose.

Finasteride 1mg tablets are used in men to treat male pattern hair loss, that is also called androgenetic alopecia or male pattern alopecia.

Precautions

Do not take if you have an allergy to finasteride or any of its components. 

If you have a history of liver disease, be sure to tell your medical provider before taking finasteride. Pregnant women or women of childbearing potential should not handle broken or crushed tablets or capsules as finasteride may be absorbed through the skin. This medication should not be taken by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Not for use in females or children. PSA levels (a lab test) may be decreased.

Side Effects

When taking finasteride, notify your medical provider if you experience side effects such as a decrease in the amount of semen, loss of interest in sex or ability to have sex, skin rash, sleepiness or unusual drowsiness, stuffy or runny nose, weakness, and trouble having or keeping an erection. 

Possible dangerous side effects when taking finasteride are lightheadedness; dizziness or fainting; pain in the testicles; swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; breast swelling; pain or tenderness, or lumps in the breast or under the arm. If you experience a dangerous side effect, call your doctor right away.

If you’re experiencing a painful or threatening reaction to your medication such as a severe allergic reaction, please get medical help immediately. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you can either reach out to your prescriber, call 911, or visit a local urgent care.

Monitoring Drug Therapy

Finasteride needs to be taken every day for benefits. You may need to take this medication for 3 months or longer before you see an effect.

Storage

Store your finasteride at room temperature (between 59 and 86 degrees F) in the packaging provided by the pharmacy until you need it. Protect your medication from light, moisture, and high humidity areas. Keep out of reach of children.

Under certain circumstances a prescription drug’s effectiveness may be affected by exposure to extremes of heat, cold, or humidity.
