Important information about your prescription
This medication should only be taken by the patient whose name appears on the prescription label.
Medication information and side effects
Atorvastatin and Rosuvastatin are HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors used to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and reduce cardiovascular risk.
- Atorvastatin’s most common side effects are muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and common cold.
- Rosuvastatin’s most common side effects are muscle pain or weakness, headache, constipation, fatigue and upset stomach.
Ezetimibe works by blocking the cholesterol in your intestines from being absorbed into your body, helping lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and total cholesterol.
- Ezetimibe’s most common side effects are muscle pain, joint pain, back pain, fatigue, diarrhea, upper respiratory tract infection, flu-like symptoms, and swollen sinuses (sinusitis).
Precautions and Contraindications

Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
- Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to atorvastatin or any of its components.
- Stop using this medication and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; fainting or feeling dizzy; very rapid heartbeat; severe skin rash or itching; or flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and joint pain.
- Seek medical care immediately and stop taking the medication if you have signs and symptoms of a rare but severe skin reaction. Symptoms may include red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin (with or without fever); red or irritated eyes; or sores in the mouth, throat, nose, or eyes.
- Notify your provider of unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or brown urine, particularly if accompanied by fever.
- Seek medical care immediately and stop taking the medication if you have signs of liver problems like dark urine, tiredness, decreased appetite, upset stomach or stomach pain, light-colored stools, throwing up, or yellow skin or eyes.
- Avoid drinking grapefruit juice or eating grapefruit while taking this medication.
- Before starting atorvastatin, inform your provider if you have liver disease or raised liver enzymes.
- Avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication. Drinking too much may increase your chance of liver disease.
- Do not take this medication if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while on this medication, stop taking the medication and contact your provider right away to discuss your treatment plan.
- Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking, especially if you use cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, glecaprevir with pibrentasvir, letermovir, or tipranavir with ritonavir.
- Notify your provider about all of your medications including prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) products, natural products, and vitamins that you are currently taking or plan on taking.
Rosuvastatin (Crestor)
- Do not take this medication if you have an allergy to rosuvastatin or any of its components.
- Stop using this medication and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; fainting or feeling dizzy; very rapid heartbeat; severe skin rash or itching; or flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and joint pain.
- If you are prescribed rosuvastatin, do not take any antacid within 2 hours of taking this medication.
- Notify your provider of unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or brown urine, particularly if accompanied by fever.
- Before starting rosuvastatin, inform your provider if you have liver disease or raised liver enzymes.
- Avoid or limit alcohol consumption while taking this medication. Drinking too much may increase your chance of liver disease.
- Do not take this medication if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while on this medication, stop taking the medication and contact your provider right away to discuss your treatment plan.

- Stop using this medication and get medical help right away if you have symptoms of a serious allergic reaction including swelling of your face, lips, tongue or throat; problems breathing or swallowing; fainting or feeling dizzy; very rapid heartbeat; severe skin rash or itching; or flu-like symptoms including fever, sore throat, cough, tiredness, and joint pain.
- If you are prescribed ezetimibe, take it at least 2 hours before OR 4 hours after taking a bile acid sequestrant such as cholestyramine, colestipol, or colesevelam.
- Notify your provider of unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or brown urine, particularly if accompanied by fever.
- Before starting ezetimibe, inform your provider if you have liver disease or raised liver enzymes.
- Do not take this medication if you are pregnant and/or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant while on this medication, stop taking the medication and contact your provider right away to discuss your treatment plan.
Directions for Use
- Atorvastatin (Lipitor)
- Take one tablet by mouth once daily or as directed by your provider.
- It is advised to take this medication at the same time each day.
- This medication can be taken with or without food.
- Rosuvastatin (Crestor)
- Take one tablet by mouth once daily or as directed by your provider.
- It is advised to take this medication at the same time each day.
- This medication can be taken with or without food.
- Ezetimibe (Zetia)
- Take one tablet by mouth once daily or as directed by your provider.
- It is advised to take this medication at the same time each day.
- This medication can be taken with or without food.
- Do not take more doses than instructed in 24 hours.
- Always check your prescription label for the correct dose prescribed by your medical provider.
- Have your blood tests and other lab work done as directed by your doctor.
Missed Dose
- If you miss a dose of the medication, take it as soon as you remember.
- If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose.
- Do not take 2 doses at the same time or within 24 hours.
- Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
Storage
- Store your medication at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) in the packaging provided by the pharmacy until you need it. Keep out of reach of children.
- Keep all medications in a safe and secure place. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Under certain circumstances a prescription drug’s effectiveness may be affected by exposure to extremes of heat, cold, or humidity. If you are concerned that your medication may have been impacted by exposure to extremes of heat, cold or humidity, please call the pharmacy using the toll-free number on the label of your prescription product.
Disposal of Medications
- Do not flush unused medication down the toilet or pour in the sink or drain.
- Dispose according to local regulations.
