Important Information about your prescription: 

This medication should only be taken by the patient whose name appears on the prescription label.

Buspirone is used for treatment of generalized anxiety disorder. It may be prescribed for other medical conditions as well, such as depression or social anxiety disorder.

  • Buspirone’s most common side effects include headaches, nervousness or excitement, drowsiness, dizziness, diarrhea, or nausea. 

Precautions and contraindications 

  • Do not take this medication if you are allergic to any of the components.
  • Stop taking this medication and seek emergency medical care if you have signs of an allergic reaction like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin with or without fever; wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat; trouble breathing, swallowing, or talking; unusual hoarseness; or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Do not take with medications called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) or within 14 days of taking an MAOI as this may result in a dangerous increase of blood pressure. These MAOI medications may be used to treat depression or Parkinson’s disease and include isocarboxazid, phenelzine, tranylcypromine, selegiline, or rasagiline. This precaution also applies to the antibiotic linezolid, methylene blue, and tryptophan.
  • Prior to starting this medication, inform your provider of any liver or kidney problems.
  • Call your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following symptoms: agitation; change in balance; confusion; hallucinations; fever; fast or abnormal heartbeat; flushing; muscle twitching or stiffness; seizures; shivering or shaking; sweating a lot; severe diarrhea, upset stomach, or throwing up; or very bad headache. These severe symptoms may point to a rare and sometimes deadly condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol while taking this medication.
  • Let your doctor know if you eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice often as this may interact with buspirone.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
  • This list of interacting drugs and health conditions does not include everything.
  • Tell your doctor and pharmacist about all of your medications, including prescription or OTC, natural products, vitamins, and health conditions. You must check to make sure that it is safe for you to take this drug with all of your drugs and health problems. Do not start, stop, or change the dose of any drug without checking with your doctor.

Directions for Use 

  • Take as prescribed by your provider. Refer to your prescription label for your prescriber’s directions and recommended dose and frequency.
  • This medication may be taken with or without food. It is recommended to take the medicine the same way each time; always take with food or always take on an empty stomach.

Missed Dose

  • If you miss a dose of the medication, take it as soon as you remember.
  • If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose.
  • Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose. 

Storage 

  • Store your medication at room temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C) in the packaging provided by the pharmacy until you need it. Keep out of reach of children.
  • Protect from light.
  • Under certain circumstances a prescription drug’s effectiveness may be affected by exposure to extremes of heat, cold, or humidity.

Disposal of Medications

  • Do not flush unused medication down the toilet or pour in the sink or drain. Dispose according to local regulations.
