Spironolactone (Generic for Aldactone)

Taking Your Prescription

Spironolactone tablets are taken by mouth once or twice daily as directed by your prescriber. If you miss a dose, take a dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, wait until then and take a regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose. Check your prescription label for the correct dose prescribed by your medical provider.

Spironolactone is used to treat cardiovascular conditions. Spironolactone is used off-label to treat hair loss, and acne, when used in combination with topical therapies. Common doses of spironolactone are 50mg up to 200mg daily. This medicine may be taken with or without food, but it should be taken consistently in regards to food each day.

Precautions

Do not use it if you have had an allergic reaction to spironolactone, if you have high potassium levels, or if you have Addison’s disease. Be sure to tell your prescriber and/or pharmacist all other medications you are taking. Some medications may interact with spironolactone including but not limited to: acetylsalicylic acid, cholestyramine, cisplatin, digoxin, heparin, lithium, trimethoprim (in Bactrim), NSAID for pain (such as ibuprofen, naproxen or aspirin), steroids (such as prednisone or dexamethasone), or blood pressure medications.

Side Effects

The most common side effects when taking spironolactone are dizziness, drowsiness, and increased sun sensitivity. If one of the following less common side effects occur, notify your prescriber: skin rashes, bloody stools, confusion, weakness, irregular heartbeat, trouble breathing, changes in menstrual cycle, numbness or tingling in your hands, feet or lips, dry mouth, increased thirst, muscle cramps, nausea, vomiting, frequent urination, weight loss, fainting, muscle twitching or unusual bruising. You may experience breast swelling, enlargement, pain or tenderness. If these occur, notify your prescriber.

When starting your medication, consider increasing your dose slowly over a few days to decrease the risk of adverse effects such as dizziness or drowsiness. If you’re experiencing a painful or threatening reaction to your medication, please get medical help now. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you can either reach out to your prescriber, call 911 or visit a local urgent care.

Monitoring Drug Therapy 

Spironolactone may take months until the full effect is realized. If taking spironolactone at the prescribed doses does not improve your symptoms, contact your medical provider.

Storage

Store your spironolactone at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees F) in the packaging provided by the pharmacy until you need it. Keep out of reach of children.Under certain circumstances a prescription drug’s effectiveness may be affected by exposure to extremes of heat, cold, or humidity.
