Taking Your Prescription

Propranolol tablets may be taken by mouth as needed for the reduction of physical symptoms as directed by your prescriber. Check your prescription label for the correct dose prescribed by your medical provider.

Propranolol is a beta-blocker that may reduce physical symptoms such as sweating, shaking, and racing heart beat.

Precautions

Do not take if you have an allergy to propranolol or any of its components.

Patients with a history of various heart conditions may not be candidates for this medication. If you have a history of low blood pressure, asthma, bronchospasm, cardiogenic shock, heart failure, pheochromocytoma, heart block, sick sinus syndrome, or sinus bradycardia, let your medical provider know before taking this medication. 

Side Effects

The most common side effects when taking propranolol are dizziness, lightheadedness, and drowsiness. Notify your medical provider if you experience chest pain, slow, fast or uneven heartbeat or trouble breathing or wheezing. 

If you’re experiencing a painful or threatening reaction to your medication such as an allergic reaction or a blistering, peeling, red skin rash, please get medical help immediately. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, you can either reach out to your prescriber, call 911 or visit a local urgent care.

Monitoring Drug Therapy

Do not take more medication than prescribed. If this medication does not produce the intended effect, notify your medical provider.

Storage

Store your propranolol at room temperature (between 68 and 77 degrees F) in the packaging provided by the pharmacy until you need it. Keep out of reach of children.

Under certain circumstances a prescription drug’s effectiveness may be affected by exposure to extremes of heat, cold, or humidity.
